Critical Literacy & Socio-Communicative Student Growth Program: Holistic Tutoring Support

The student’s story is our starting point. Lived experiences and unique learning needs, as described by students, families, and caretakers, inform goal-setting, and we co-create strategies and plans that guide late elementary to high school age students toward contextual discernment, logically expressive communication skills, and self awareness.

Round shapes flowing and intersecting as individual pods, which grow distinctly unique and yet vital to the whole.

Drawing Out Dreams

The most important aspect of implementing our tutoring program is listening to and incorporating the student’s voice in the creation of the plan.

  • Narrative Discovery: Every tutoring relationship initiates with an interview-style conversation; the student has the opportunity to tell their story, make meaning of life experiences, and forge shared accountability in our learning alliance.
  • Individualized Approach: We determine the desired result, establish what evidence will indicate progress, and form practice plans. Goal-setting and progress checks emphasize the student’s self-leadership strategies.

Fostering Excellence For All

Critical literacy builds upon foundational reading and writing skills. By reading, we become proximate to worlds that might otherwise be withheld from us, and by writing we integrate and transfer that knowledge into a world we can readily create. Thus, we encourage students’ creativity, which enhances communicative potential to receive new ideas and different perspectives and then act upon them expressively and empathetically.

  • Seek & Find: Develop critical analysis and an assertive mindset by practicing tactics to engage with focused curiosity, ascertain key facts and details, and make relevant inferences.
  • Process & Purpose: Sustain focus with intentional effort through each stage of the writing process. Produce authentic, logically organized writing.

Cultivating Character

Reading and writing are outgrowths of our human need, desire, and right to connect and communicate, yet being seen and heard increases vulnerability to judgment, stigma, and stereotype. Everything we work toward is helping students show up for life with dignity and confidence.

  • Critical Self-Reflection, Identity Development: Writing and expressive exercises guide students to understand their inner being, unique attributes, and identities as qualities to be valued and harnessed.
  • Empathetic Communication: Invite a full expression of the student’s inner voice and connect to purpose by considering the audience and the impact of words and communicative intent.

I felt very comfortable coming to (Natalie) with any questions, yet she also gave me the space to practice my critical thinking skills and come to conclusions on my own.
